This week we will be learning:

  • I Love You Ritual song: Our S.T.A.R. helper will pick a previous favorite we have learned
  • Penmanship: review of Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, 11-20
  • Sight Words: here, said
  • Word Family Houses
  • Digraph (sh, th, ch)

Reading:

  • books: Snowmen at Night, There was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, The Snowy Day
  • Retell Anchor Chart, Predicting, Compare/Contract
  • make inferences based on cover, title, illustrations and plot
  • sequencing and predicting – students will help complete a sequencing anchor chart using notecards
  • Poems: I’m a Little Snowman and The Bumblebee
    • Find sight words, letters, words, & sentences in poems

Math:

  • solve word problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and modeling the action of joining to represent addition
  • What Does Not Belong? PowerPoint – students will share what doesn’t belong in the picture and why? 
  • Problem Solving – There were 9 boys and 3 girls in the class. How many children were in the class?
  • Number Talk: chart Ways to make 10 using red/yellow magnetic counters (have students use their own magnetic ten frames to come up with the addition problems)
  • Lesson: MIMIO: Comparing and Ordering Cards
  • Introduce the definition of compose and Practice using composing mats, students will practice composing numbers and coming up with addition problems to go with.

    Counting Jar, counting backwards to double check amount in jar

  • Number Talk: Dot Cards, What do you see? How do you see it?

Math Centers:

  • Count the Room
  • snowman number toss then build number on ten frame
  • Roll a die and make a web with that number. Use cheerios to compose different number sentences for that sum.
  • Math Activity: MIMIO: Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers
  • I have, Who Has, Math Game

Writing

  • Interactive Writing: Draw and label a snowman. Write sentences to describe the snowman.
  • Review Rules of Kindergarten, illustrate book
  • Review Writing Time Expectations
  • Begin writing stories with B/M/E
  • Review anchor charts – What do writer’s Do? and I can tell a story!
  • Begin setting and using writing goals
  • Star Student/Daily News: we will pick a few students each day and have them help them write a sentence they would like to share about themselves. We will focus on capitalization, spacing, punctuation and sentence structure.
  • journals – use sight words, word family houses
  • writing about personal experiences (focus on starting sentences with a capital letter, spacing between words, punctuation), reference our heart maps to get ideas of what to write about
  • continue adding to our personal word wall in our writing folders and Use sentence frames to help us write
  • lesson on writing words (say it slow, listen for sounds, write sounds you hear)
Social Studies/Science:
  •  Animal Research-Introduce how to research animals using Pebblego.com

    -Research and make a list: What animals hibernate in the winter?

  • Fun Friday – Make Snow

Feeling Buddies:

  • Using the Feeling Buddies in the Safe Place

    Read Sophie is a STAR, match the feelings on Sophie’s face to Feeling Buddies

    Review why it is important to have a safe place in our classroom.
    Review self regulation steps:

  • Step 1 (your body signals you need to go to the safe place)
  • Step 2 (calm down using a breathing strategy)
  • Step 3 (pick a buddy that matches how you feel)

I am so excited to see everyone tomorrow at school! I hope you all had a great Christmas break!  I can’t wait to hear about all the excitement Christmas brought to each of my kinders.  I want to thank everyone for all of your help with our class Christmas party. You are all such a blessing to our class and I appreciate everyone’s help and support. The kids had so much fun! Thank you to Amber and Jessica for your help in organizing and planning it. I also want to express my gratitude to all of you for the gifts you blessed me with! It has been a wonderful Christmas.
